ARC Raiders is entering a major transformation phase as Embark Studios experiments with a redesigned progression system that fundamentally changes how players advance. Instead of rewarding cautious extraction-based gameplay, the new model prioritizes direct combat performance.
From my perspective, this immediately changes how I approach each run. What used to feel like a careful looting loop now feels closer to a constant combat test.
At the heart of the update is a simple but powerful redesign: Skill Points are no longer tied to extracted loot value. Instead, progression is now earned through damage dealt in combat. This means players are rewarded for actively engaging enemies rather than avoiding conflict. Every successful hit contributes directly to advancement, making combat the primary driver of progression.
This change reshapes the core gameplay loop. Stealth-heavy and passive strategies lose efficiency, while aggressive play becomes optimal. Extraction zones are expected to become more volatile, as more players choose to fight rather than avoid confrontation.
Players can no longer afford to treat high-tier equipment as endgame-only resources. Since damage output directly affects progression speed, using powerful weapons early and often becomes essential. Mods, upgrades, and optimized loadouts now function as core progression tools rather than situational advantages.
Enemy prioritization also changes. Larger ARC units and elite machines become the most efficient sources of progression due to their higher health pools. These encounters reward sustained damage output and make each engagement more valuable in terms of Skill Point gain.
To better understand the shift, here is a comparison between the old and new progression systems:
| System | Old Model | New Model |
| Progression Source | Extracted loot value | Damage dealt in combat |
| Playstyle Rewarded | Stealth and avoidance | Aggressive engagement |
| Combat Incentive | Optional | Core requirement |
| Gear Usage | Conservative saving | Active deployment |
| Match Flow | Slow and strategic | Fast and chaotic |
Expedition rewards continue to provide long-term progression incentives. Players who completed Expedition 3 receive the full Patchwork Set, a rugged cosmetic outfit representing survival and persistence.
A new Expedition cycle is also beginning, introducing fresh cosmetic rewards for active players. Each expedition continues the trend of offering unique visual progression that reflects player participation and long-term commitment.
This update marks a clear philosophical shift for ARC Raiders, moving it away from extraction-only optimization toward a more combat-centric identity.
While this may feel like a dramatic change for players who preferred stealth or loot-focused gameplay, it also opens the door to faster progression loops, more intense encounters, and higher overall match volatility.
