With recent updates to Diablo 4, the endgame boss system has been redesigned into a streamlined feature called the Lair Boss system. Instead of the older ladder format, players now progress through structured boss tiers with clearer rewards, targeted loot pools, and specialized keys.

If you're entering Season 13, learning how these bosses, materials, and rewards work will help you farm Uniques and Mythic Uniques far more efficiently.

What Are Lair Bosses?

Lair Bosses are high-level encounters unlocked in Torment I difficulty and above. They are separated into three difficulty categories based on mechanics, loot quality, and required materials.

How Lair Boss Keys Work?

One of the biggest changes in the new system is how keys are used. You no longer need materials to summon a boss. Instead, keys are consumed only when opening the Hoard Chest after the battle. This means failed attempts are less punishing because your materials remain untouched if you die.

Stygian Stones Explained

Stygian Stones are among the most valuable crafting materials in Season 13. These items can be converted into any Greater Lair Key at a 1:1 ratio, making them extremely useful when farming specific bosses like Duriel or Andariel.

Finding Lair Bosses

The map system has been significantly improved, making it much easier to navigate. Every Lair Boss location is now clearly marked with a dedicated icon on the map. Hovering over the icon displays all essential information at a glance, including the boss name, loot pool details, key requirements, required material amount, and a direct Party Finder option. Additionally, players can teleport straight to the boss location, greatly speeding up boss rotations and improving overall efficiency.

How the Loot System Works

Every Lair Boss in Diablo 4 has its own dedicated loot pool containing both Unique items and Mythic Uniques. One of the biggest advantages of the new system is that the first Unique item dropped after a boss kill is guaranteed to come from that boss’s personal loot table. This makes targeted farming much more efficient for players searching for specific gear pieces.

Any additional Unique items that drop afterward have a 50% chance to come from either the boss-specific loot pool or the general global Unique pool. Because of this change, farming bosses for build-defining items feels far more consistent and rewarding than in previous seasons.

Running Lair Bosses in a party also increases your overall farming efficiency. For every additional player in the group, there is a 33% chance for the boss to drop an extra Unique item from its dedicated loot pool. Over long farming sessions, full groups can generate significantly more valuable drops, making coordinated party runs one of the best ways to farm endgame gear quickly in Season 13.

Torment Difficulty Rewards

Higher Torment difficulties significantly increase the amount of loot you receive from Lair Bosses. On Torment III, bosses drop one additional Unique item, giving players better chances at valuable gear upgrades. Torment IV offers the best rewards in the system, with bosses capable of dropping up to seven Unique items in a single run. Because of the higher drop volume and improved farming efficiency, most players targeting Mythic Uniques will eventually focus on Torment IV difficulty.

Belial’s Ambush Mechanic

After defeating a Lair Boss, players have a chance to trigger a surprise encounter known as Belial’s Ambush. Belial appears immediately after the original boss fight and uses dangerous Blood and Poison attacks that can quickly pressure unprepared builds. While unexpected, this ambush adds an exciting extra challenge to endgame farming runs.

Defeating Belial rewards players with a second round of loot from the boss they just defeated, effectively doubling the value of the run. Players can also obtain a Betrayer’s Husk, a special material required to summon Exalted Belial later on. The best part is that this ambush does not require any additional summoning materials, making it a highly rewarding bonus encounter.
