In Elden Ring, players have countless ways to fight. You can cast devastating sorceries, unleash powerful incantations, spam Ashes of War, or simply rely on traditional light and heavy attacks. But one combat mechanic remains surprisingly overlooked despite being one of the strongest systems in the entire game: power stancing.

Power stancing allows players to dual wield two weapons from the same weapon class and attack using the L1 button. Instead of swinging one weapon at a time, your character attacks with both simultaneously, unlocking entirely new movesets, faster combos, incredible status buildup, and absurd damage potential.

To truly test how powerful this mechanic is, every major boss in the game was challenged using only power stance attacks. No normal R1s, no charged heavies — just dual wield chaos from start to finish. The results were honestly insane.

1. Starting the Run with Dual Clubs

Despite looking ridiculous, dual clubs turned out to be surprisingly effective early on. The jumping L1 attacks dealt huge poise damage, allowing stagger opportunities much faster than expected. Even early bosses like Margit struggled against repeated jump attacks.

What made power stancing immediately stand out was how aggressive the gameplay felt. Every jump attack hit multiple times, status effects built rapidly, and enemies barely had room to breathe.

2. Thrusting Swords Were Better Than Expected

One of the biggest surprises of the run came from power stanced thrusting swords.

Using combinations like Frozen Needle alongside bleed-infused thrusting weapons created nonstop pressure with frostbite and bleed procs stacking together. The L1 combo attacked incredibly fast and allowed constant poking while staying relatively safe.

Against several bosses, the dual thrusting sword setup completely melted health bars before enemies could react. It became clear that thrusting swords are one of the most underrated weapon classes in Elden Ring.

3. Halberds and Great Spears Completely Dominated

If there was one category that truly broke the game, it was great spears and halberds.

Weapons like the Golden Halberd, Dragon Halberd, and dual heavy great spears absolutely destroyed bosses through raw stagger damage and relentless poke pressure. Every attack felt safe, fast, and devastating.

Power stanced great spears especially became one of the strongest setups tested during the entire challenge. Their range allowed constant aggression while maintaining distance, and bosses often staggered before they could even finish attack patterns.

Against late-game encounters, these builds performed at an S-tier level without question.

4. Twinblades Remained Overpowered

It would not be a true Elden Ring challenge without mentioning twinblades.

Dual twinblades continue to be one of the strongest setups in the game due to their absurd jumping attacks and insane bleed buildup. Bosses like Fire Giant barely survived long enough to complete mechanics before getting shredded by consecutive jump L1 combos.

The sheer speed and hit count make twinblades perfect for status effects, especially bleed and frost. Even after multiple balance patches, they remain completely dominant.

Some Weapon Classes Struggled

Not every power stance setup turned out amazing. Axes, perfume bottles, and regular spears often felt underwhelming compared to the stronger categories. While some had interesting movesets, they lacked the stagger power or damage output needed for tougher late-game bosses.

Perfume bottles looked stylish and unique, but their actual damage was disappointing. Standard axes also suffered from awkward attack patterns that struggled against aggressive enemies.

Final Power Stance Tier List

After testing nearly every weapon class against major bosses, the final rankings looked something like this:

S Tier
Great Spears
Halberds
Twinblades
Great Hammers
Colossal Weapons

A Tier
Thrusting Swords
Heavy Thrusting Swords
Reapers
Straight Swords
Light Greatswords
Great Katanas

B Tier
Great Curved Swords
Great Axes
Whips

C Tier
Axes
Spears
Katanas
Perfume Bottles

Power stancing in Elden Ring remains one of the most fun and devastating mechanics in the entire game. While some weapon classes clearly outperform others, almost every dual wield setup creates a completely different gameplay experience.

From dual clubs at the start of the adventure to colossal weapons crushing late-game bosses, the challenge proved just how strong — and entertaining — power stanced combat can be.
