ABOUT DIABLO 4 ITEMS
Diablo 4 Item Rarity
  • Common. They do not grant magic affixes, but grant some base affixes.
  • Magic. More powerful than normal items, adding one or two affixes to the basic item. Can have the highest individual affix.
  • Rare. Begin with 3 affixes. Rare Items are higher in quality, but also rarity, than Magic Items.
  • Legendary. In Diablo IV, Legendary Items will have an equal or even greater power level compared to that of Set Items. Sub-types include "Sacred Legendary" and "Ancestral Legendary." Legendaries grant buffs to the player. A Legendary's property can be transferred from one item to another by removing its "aspect" (this destroys the original item) and transferring it. This can only be done once. However, the Codex of Power allows players to choose buffs for their Legendaries at will. Sacred and Ancestral Legendaries only drop towards the end-game. Legendaries cannot be traded.
  • Unique. Fixed affixes. They've been described as "super-charged" versions of Legendaries, and only drop at high levels. They are exceptionally rare, and are designed as "pinnacle items" for specific builds. They cannot be traded.
List of Diablo 4 Item Types
  • Weapons: Axes, Staves, Wands, Maces, Swords, Bows, Two-Handed Maces, Two-handed Swords, Crossbows, Spears, Daggers, Flails, Polarms.
  • Armor: Helms, Belts, Shoulders, Chest Armor, Bracers, Leg Armor, Cloaks, Gloves, Boots, Amulets, Rings, Shields
  • Gems: Precious stones that can be inserted into socketed weapons. When inserted, they provide bonuses to the item. There are different levels of the gems. Starting from the lowest: Chipped Gem, Flawed Gem, Gem, Flawless Gem and Perfect Gem. The Jeweler has everything you need to craft powerful Gems and socket them into your gear to boost your character's stats, be it more Damage, Resistances, Life, or Damage Reduction.
  • Runes: Like gems, these are inserted into weapons. Runes range from very weak to quite powerful, and if inserted correctly, they will yield a runeword. Diablo 4 won't launch with runes. It likely appears in a season or expansion.
  • Charms: When held in your inventory, they can provide you with a bonus. Currently, there is no Charm Item in Diablo 4.
  • Jewels: Similar to gems and runes, jewels are also inserted into socketed weapons. They can be magical, rare and unique like regular items, and can provide powerful bonuses. Used to create crafted items.
  • Scrolls: Used to identify items and to open town portals. The Scroll of Escape, a new, rare consumable item announced for Diablo 4, will allow a player to escape dangerous situations.
  • Tomes: Used to store scrolls, maximum 20 scrolls per tome.
  • Arrows and Bolts: Ammunition for Bows and Crossbows respectively.
  • Potions & Elixirs: They increase Life, Mana, Stamina, provide resistances or can be thrown at monsters.
  • Keys: Used to open locked chests.
  • Quest Items: Items used during the various quests the player completes in the game.
Runewords
Rune Words are specific combinations of runes that grant specific socketed items several new magical properties. Even though Runes and Runewords were shown off at BlizzCon 2019, they will not be a part of Diablo IV at launch but the developers still plan on including them in some way with a post-launch update.
Sets
Sets are like Unique Items, in the way that every time you find the same item, it has the same attributes. However, in general, Set Items are a tad weaker than Unique Items, or so called "Uniques". This is because Set Items are each part of specific sets, and moreover, if you equip the entire set, you will gain an extra set of Bonus Affixes, hence the name "Set Items".
Set Items don't return in Diablo IV, instead, they may be included in a post-launch update. The developers felt that Set Items "guided players too strongly," and designed the game to allow greater flexibility.
Glyphs
Glyphs are items found throughout Sanctuary that, when embedded into a Paragon Board, confer various benefits based upon the number of active tiles within their radius.
Glyphs can also be leveled up by delving into some particularly dangerous dungeons. Leveling up a Glyph extends the radius of their effect, allowing each one to draw power from or impart power to even more active tiles.

Loot System
Like Diablo III, Diablo IV has a Personal Loot system, where loot is generated separately per player. Diablo 4 will introduce instanced loot which means that when loot drops, only you can see your Diablo 4 items. Other players will only see it once you have picked it up and then dropped it.
Anything will be able to drop anywhere, similar to previous Diablo games. However, each monster family will be more likely to drop certain item types than others. For example, Bandits will have an increased chance to drop Maces, Crossbows, and Boots; and Drowned have an increased chance to drop Pants.
Characters can equip a total of 10 items, except for Barbarians, who are able to wear a total of 12 because of the Arsenal system, and Rogues, who can equip a total of 11 items.
Smart Loot
Blizzard has stated that Smart Loot will be making a return in Diablo 4. This means a higher percentage of drops will be specific to your class.
Smart loot introduced a system where the game would roll item types and/or affixes appropriate for the class of the character that finds or crafts or gambles the item.
In Diablo 3, around 85% of item drops or item rolls (crafting/gambling) roll with bonuses targeted at the class of the character. It’s likely a similar rate will appear in Diablo 4.
Class-restricted items would never roll with a mainstat or +skill bonus not suited to the class being played. No matter which class found the item. stats would be rolled suited to the class the item was for. For example, in Diablo 3, Monk fist weapons will never roll with Int or Str, Wizard sources will never roll with Str or Dex, etc. A class-specific item will never roll with a mainstat or skill bonus that would be useless to its intended class.
To simplify, Smart Loot system rolls useful item types with the mainstat and skills appropriate for the class of the character that you are playing.
