Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred Prep Guide: 5 Things to Do Before Season 12 Ends
The bells are tolling for the Season of Slaughter. On April 28, 2026, Diablo 4 will undergo its most radical transformation yet with the release of the Lord of Hatred expansion. We are leaving the gore-soaked arenas of Season 12 behind and setting sail for the Skovos Isles—the legendary, Greco-Roman inspired home of the Amazons—to face the Prime Evil, Mephisto, himself.
However, entering a new expansion with a messy stash and unspent resources is a recipe for a slow start. If you want to hit the ground running with the new Paladin or Warlock classes, you need to complete this essential checklist in the next few days.
1. Finalize Your "Abattoir of Zir" Progression
The Season 12 exclusive mechanic, the Slaughterhouse, will disappear once the clock strikes midnight on the 28th. If you haven't pushed to your personal best tier, now is the time. Recent hotfixes in Patch 2.6.1 have smoothed out the difficulty spikes, making the exclusive "Blood-Soaked" titles and cosmetic weapon skins much more attainable. Don't let these limited-time prestige items slip through your fingers.
2. The Great Stash Purge
This is the most critical step for any veteran player. The Lord of Hatred expansion introduces the revolutionary Talisman (Rune) System and the long-awaited return of Set Bonuses. These new item types will require significant inventory space.
Action: Salvage any "maybe useful" Legendaries. If you haven't used that specific Aspect in the last three months, you won't use it in Skovos.
Goal: Aim to have at least three full stash tabs completely empty before launch day. You’ll need the room for the deluge of new loot.
3. Stockpile Your Materials and Gold
New classes mean new gear, and new gear means expensive Masterworking and Enchanting costs. The gold sink in the upcoming expansion is expected to be steep, especially with the introduction of the Horadric Cube crafting recipes.

You do not want to be backtracking to old zones like Scosglen or Hawezar for missing Paragon points when the rest of the community is exploring the marble temples and volcanic shores of the new continent.
5. Hold Your Tree of Whispers Caches
A pro-tip for a fast start: stop turning in your final Grim Favors in the last 24 hours of the season. If you hold onto completed Tree of Whispers Caches and open them after the expansion launches (and after you’ve reached the new level milestones), they often provide a massive jumpstart on localized materials and high-item-power gear suited for the new difficulty tiers.
