The gates of Skovos are finally opening. With the launch of Season 13: Season of Reckoning and the massive Lord of Hatred expansion, the meta for Diablo 4 is being completely rewritten.
This season, however, the answer isn't a debate—it’s a certainty. If you aren't starting S13 as the Paladin, you are intentionally handicapping your progress. After spending the last few days diving into the pre-patch notes and closed-beta data, I’m convinced that this isn't just a "new class" honeymoon phase; it’s a total shift in power dynamics.
The Paladin Advantage: Why Bench the Others?
While the Warlock offers flashy demon summoning and the Barbarian remains a reliable tank, the Paladin’s new Aura Mastery system is fundamentally game-changing. Unlike the passive buffs of previous games, S13 Auras interact directly with the environment.
The "Thorns of Justice" aura doesn't just reflect damage; it triggers the new "Holy Chain" reaction, which clears entire rooms of mobs while you’re simply walking. I’ve personally found that the Paladin’s mobility—combining Charge with the new Shield Glide mechanic—allows for a clearing speed that the Sorcerer can only dream of in the early game. If you want to reach the new Level 70 cap and start farming Torment 12 within the first few hours, the Paladin is your only logical choice.
The Secret Sauce: Mastering the Loot Filter
Beyond class choice, the biggest quality-of-life update in Season 13 is the long-awaited Loot Filter. For seasons, we’ve complained about "inventory tetris." Now, we finally have the tools to fix it. To truly maximize your opening day dividends, you need to set up your filter before you even hit Level 10.
Here is my recommended "Day One" Filter Setup:
In S13, the filter allows you to "Auto-Salvage" lower tiers on pickup. By filtering out the noise early, you save approximately 15 minutes of "town-time" every hour. In the race to the top of the leaderboards, that is the difference between being a leader and a follower.
The "Lord of Hatred" Power Spike
The synergy between the Paladin and the new Horadric Cube mechanics is where the real power lies. The Paladin’s class-specific quests in the new jungle zones provide early access to "Socketed Runes" that specifically buff shield-based damage. While other classes are struggling to find synergy in the new vertical maps, the Paladin’s kit feels tailor-made for the environment.
Season 13 is a turning point for Diablo 4. The combination of a refined leveling curve, the technical brilliance of the Loot Filter, and the sheer power of the Paladin makes this the best time to return to Sanctuary. I’m currently holding my own rolls and resources to ensure a massive head start, and I suggest you do the same.
